In 2009 Doddie Weir was the guest speaker at the Aberdeen Wanderers’ Annual dinner at the Palm Court Hotel. It was an excellent evening which lives long in the memory of many senior club members.
During the evening John Currie (former Wanderers’ president 2004 - 2007) won a 2009 Lions top during the evening and Doddie Weir signed it “To John, Top man”. It was talked about at the time that it would get framed and placed in the club house. For one reason or another it wasn’t done and lived in a cupboard until recently. In 2024 John handed the shirt over to the club to get framed and perhaps auction or raffle it for a charity. After some discussion amongst the WOMBATs (Wanderers Old Men Battling Against Time), it was agreed to get it framed and up on the wall in the clubhouse with a fundraiser to be arranged for the “My Name’5 is Doddie” charity.
Former Wanderers’ captain Greg Johnston (1991-1992) kindly organised and paid to have the shirt framed. James Smith arranged placing it on the wall in the clubhouse and set up a just giving page for the charity donations.
A total of £380 was raised by the WOMBATs towards the charity which will go on to help research into MND. This story encapsulates everything about the spirit of rugby and the respect and fondness anyone who ever met Doddie had for him. His memory will live on within the club with the shirt and the stories will still be shared from a great club evening.
